In June 2017, Chris Rasmussen led a group of 21 SDSU liberal studies students on a study abroad program in Granada, in the Andalucía region of southern Spain.  As part of this program, Chris taught these SDSU students (see photo) a three credit mathematics class (Math 313) focused on rate of change and algebra. As part of the course students created what is known as a “math trail,” which is a short video relating course concepts to the local environment. Students also interacted with teachers and students at Colegio Virgen de Gracia, a semi-private bilingual Catholic school serving local K-12 students. SDSU students made observations, participated in lessons, and took away experiences to enhance their futures as elementary and middle school teachers. In addition to studying mathematics and observing local elementary school classrooms, students engaged with unique aspects of the locale, with an emphasis on local culture and history, including visiting the famous Alhambra. These experiences were designed to be personally enriching as well as useful to their future careers as teachers. To further enrich their experiences, SDSU students stayed with local host families, giving them a chance to engage with a Spanish family and live like a local!
