Degree Learning Outcomes: B.S. in Chemistry with Emphasis in Biochemistry

Establish a Foundation and Depth of Knowledge Pertaining to Fundamental Chemical Principles with an emphasis on those involved in organic and biochemical processes
Chemistry students should be able to recognize, describe, draw, and name important classes of atoms, functional groups, and molecules; explain the atomic and subatomic structure and properties of matter; describe the origin and nature of chemical bonding and its influence on molecular structure and properties; relate macromolecular properties to molecular characteristics; and predict as well as explain the mechanisms and outcomes of chemical reactions.

Demonstrate Competency in Problem Solving and Quantitative Reasoning
Chemistry students should demonstrate the ability to quantify and interpret the reliability of measured physical and chemical properties of molecules and mixtures using dimensional and statistical analysis. They should also develop knowledge of essential techniques to synthesize, separate, purify, identify, and quantify compounds, and apply the scientific method to investigate chemical phenomena.

Develop Skills used in Professional Chemical Settings
Chemistry students should develop proficiency with modern instrumentation and laboratory techniques in analytical, organic, and biochemical chemistry. They should be able to read and understand Standard Operating Procedures, keep accurate and legible laboratory records, and practice proper chemical use, storage, and disposal. In addition, students should demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, collaborate effectively on complex projects, and uphold scientific ethics regarding data integrity, citation practices, plagiarism, and publication of results.

Effectively Employ Chemical Literature and Information Management Systems
Chemistry students should be able to efficiently search and retrieve information from chemical literature, critically evaluate technical articles, and create and maintain a personal database of relevant scientific resources.
