Doctoral Program
Ph.D. in Chemistry

SDSU / UC San Diego Chemistry Joint Doctoral Program
The Ph.D. in Chemistry at San Diego State University is offered through the SDSU UC San Diego Joint Doctoral Program (JDP), combining the strengths of both institutions. Students complete graduate coursework at UC San Diego in their first year, then conduct doctoral research at SDSU under faculty mentorship, with opportunities for collaboration across campuses. After advancing to candidacy through exams and a dissertation proposal, students defend their research before a joint committee. Most are supported by teaching assistantships early on and may transition to research roles. The program provides outstanding preparation for careers in academia, industry, government, and related fields.
